7 Days Primates Safari in Rwanda

Nyungwe Forest and Volcanoes National Park

On this Rwanda Safari you will exclusively trek the various primates found in Rwanda like the mountain gorilla, chimpanzee, golden monkey and colobus monkey. With luck, a visitor will also sight more species.

Day 1: Arrival and Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park
Our Cycads safari driver will personally meet you on your arrival at the airport. You will then be transferred to Nyungwe forest national park arriving late in the afternoon. Check into Gisakura guest house for dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Primates Walk in Nyungwe

Have breakfast then report to the park head quarters for briefing. This trek can take anything from a few hours to a full day depending on where the chimpanzees are. Equip yourself with packed lunch and plenty of water. However, it is not guaranteed to see the chimps as they are unpredictable and can move long distances in one day.  This primates walk may grant you opportunities to sight other primates like the Rwenzori colobus, L’hoests monkey, the Silver monkey, Owl faced monkey and the Grey cheeked Mangabey to mention but a few. After the trek, return for dinner and overnight in Gisakura Guest House.

Day 3: Forest Walk in Nyungwe

After breakfast spend another day in Nyungwe forest with a 4-5 hour trek in the rainforest on one of the many trails maintained by the park authorities. Chances are high that you will see what you missed yesterday. Overnight at Gisakura Guest House. (FB)

Day 4: to Volcanoes National Park

Have breakfast then leave Nyungwe. Have a long drive to northern Rwanda to the foothills of the Virungas – Parc Nationale des Volcans. The drive from Nyungwe will take around 4 and half hours. Dinner and overnight at gorilla nest/Virunga lodge/ Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge.

Day 5: Gorilla Tracking

Breakfast early then report to the park head quarters for briefing on gorilla trackers’ code of conduct. You will meet your guide here and proceed to the starting point of the trek to your allocated group of habituated mountain gorillas. The length of the trek varies depending on the location of the gorillas are as well as the weather conditions. You can take you around 1-6 hours tracking. Spend one hour with the gorillas- ‘a fascinating experience’ before trekking back to the base. Dinner and overnight at gorilla nest/Virunga lodge/ Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge.

Day 6: Golden Monkey Tracking

After breakfast either go on a second gorilla trek (subject to the payment of a supplement at the time of gorilla permit booking) or track the rare golden monkey. Alternatively visit Dian Fossey’s grave. All these optional activities require booking in advance. Return to Kigali in the afternoon. Dinner and overnight at a Hotel in Kigali.

Day 7: City Tour and Departure
After breakfast if time allows have a short city tour of Kigali then transfer to Kigali international airport to meet your home flight.
